The Director Fuel leads the Fuel Operations and Fuel Strategy teams to manage all commercial aspects of Wheels Up’s fuel supply chain, making investment and management decisions across the enterprise on Wheels Up’s largest spend category. The objective of the Fuel Operations and Fuel Strategy teams is to manage and streamline the processes through which Wheels Up and its operators acquire fuel, manage vendor relationships with fuel suppliers and Fixed Base Operators (FBOs), and optimize Wheels Up’s expenditure on fuel and related services. This position is key in the development and implementation of strategy and tactics that grow the business, improve margins, and create strong partnerships across the fuel and FBO landscape.

Responsibilities

  • Create a dynamic, challenging, and rewarding work environment to keep talented and experienced professionals engaged in managing this highly critical program and commodity supporting Wheels Up’s operation.
  • Oversee planning, negotiating, financing, and investment related to ensuring the security, continuity and efficiency of Wheels Up’s fuel supply chain.
  • Design and execute the overall fuel strategy of the company, from day-to-day transactions to long-term transformational initiatives.
  • Coordinate with various levels of management and departments to ensure that fuel-related processes run effective and efficient, ultimately supporting the crew and member experiences.
  • Manage and grow productive relationships with fuel suppliers, FBOs, and as applicable fuel consortia, pipelines, terminals and airports.
  • Continually engage and optimize the FBO relationships across North America and other geographical locations as required or deemed important to Wheels Up.
  • Develop relationships with FBO leaders, stakeholders and decision-makers.
  • Lead contract negotiations and continuous fuel tender processes with fuel sources and FBOs.
  • Represent Wheels Up’s interests in regular business partner meetings and industry conferences and events.
  • Work with finance in developing and monitoring company budget for fuel operations, including fuel taxes; investigate, explain and as applicable lead correction of variances versus budget/forecast using market intelligence.
  • Work with finance, accounting and as applicable business partners to validate weekly pricing, quotations and invoices and ensure proper authorization of spend.
  • Optimize fuel related expenditures by leading evaluations of self-supply capabilities, fuel tankering processes, and direct engagements with traders, brokers, and other market players, including the use of financial derivatives to manage exposure to commodity price volatility.
  • Consolidate sources of supply and or methods of payment to produce optimal mix of economies of scale and flexibility in marketplace.
  • Lead on-call readiness for fuel emergencies and shortages.

Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree in Business, Finance, Engineering, Operations, or Supply Chain Management, or equivalent experience
  • 10 years of experience in supply chain management or business operations roles
  • 5 years of experience managing fuel operations and commercial supply chain and logistics, refining, trading, or marketing; strong preference for prior experience managing fuel activities within airline/aviation or airport fuel operations
  • 3 years of experience building, leading and motivating successful teams
  • Demonstrated negotiation and contracting skills
  • Prior experience with financial derivatives, capital markets, or commodity trading and related market intelligence and analytical tools
  • Self-starter with executive presence and the ability to manage multiple projects effectively involving multiple departments and/or companies
  • Ability to prioritize and manage multiple tasks simultaneously
  • Ability to proactively and effectively communicate with all levels of management both verbally and written
  • Excellent teamwork and interpersonal skills with proven ability to work effectively in fast-paced and multi-faceted environments
